So the mass of 1 cubic meter of ice is 916.7 kilograms at 0c and the gravitational force of Europa is 1.32m/s squared. my question is how much stress would this put on the machine when it is under all that? and how strong would something need just to pierce the ice?

yes, the pressure of the ice and also ocean below is very important to understand. Should be easy calculations..

If you penetrate the ice and become covered again the ice pressure is of concern. I hardly think it is possible to penetrate the ice without this happening.. You just do not leave an open hole above you...

The ice hole is almost guaranteed to re-freeze nearly instantaneously because it would be directly exposed to space... Further down this could be different though...

Assuming your assumptions and numbers are correct...

pressure = density * gravity * height (

pressure = 916.7kg/1m^3 * 1.32 m/s^2 * 10,000 m

pressure = 12,100 kPa (or about 120 atm after unit conversions)

This is assuming the ice column is frozen solid at 0C, which I doubt will be the case, but it's a close ballpark figure.

This is not that much. For comparison, the Challenger Deep location in the Mariana trench is also about 10km underwater, and is over 1000 atm. We've been there twice now as a species.

This pressure (10km under ice on Europa) is equivalent to diving about 1200 meters for earth. The US Navy says their military submarines go lower than 800 meters, and I'm sure much lower than that
