Compile References to Previous Mission Design and Development
on: September 20, 2013, 20:23

The first step should be compiling mission architecture studies and hardware development that has already been done, or is ongoing.

NASA and others have done thorough studies of robotic missions to Europa. Current flagship Mars missions have trumped development priority, but a lot of work has been done. Juno will arrive at Jupiter in 2016. While not targeting Europa for it's primary mission, it is collecting tons of data about the environment.

Examples:

Europa is strongly represented in the National Research Council's Planetary Decadal Survey report for 2013-2022. Europa missions are currently deemed secondary to Mars, and prohibitively expensive in the near term, but significant studies on cheaper, more focused mission options have been done/are ongoing.

Before we start too much brainstorming, we should familiarize ourselves with work that has already been done, and make sure people new to the forum have readily available resources to learn about these past and current efforts.
